The Flying Boardbag

by admin on June 28, 2009

We had to share this great email we got his week.

“I just wanted to drop you a few lines thanking you for saving my ass. ( my dumb ass that is ). On a recent trip to the beach with my family, i was rushing to leave my hotel and didn’t strap my surfborad down well enough. Lucky for me, it was safe and comfy inside a wavetribe surfboard bag. At 65mph, down a Maryland highway, it was my worst fuc!@#$%^&*_+ ing nightmare. With a slight wooooooshing sound and a whole lot of dismay as I looked in the rear view mirror, my board was launched into the air, coming to rest in the grass beside the roadway.

Everyone loves their boards of course, but this was no ordinary surfboard. Mine is a Grain surfboard from a kit that I made myself with tons of hours and passion involved. Almost crying as I opened the boardbag, I couldn’t believe my board was 100% unscathed. It was still perfect. Thank you for making not only an environmentally friendly product, but also one that works above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you so much !!!!!!!!!!”

Wave Tribe team rider Mercedes Maidana became the first woman to surf epic El Buey in Chile this week. It was her first time to tow-in, a new experience that this Hawaiian local said she was very excited about—we’ll see lots more of Mercedes charging big tow-in surf around the globe.

mm-buey

When Mercedes first approached Wave Tribe we asked her why she was interested in partnering with the world’s first green surf company, her stoke for surfing and her passion for life was as evident in her answer, “surfing is the love of my life. I would not know what to do or who to be if I didn’t have it. As any loving relationship, I think that it has to have a balance of giving and receiving. The ocean gives me more gifts than I could ever reciprocate.”

Wave Tribe team riders are more than surfers, they are conscious beings that recognize the importance of helping to transform the surf industry and when we asked Mercedes why green surf products were important to her she responded, “One way for me to keep the balance is to start doing small changes in my life to preserve what I love the most. That’s why sustainability is so important: it is the simplest way to be thankful to nature.”

Mercedes is an surf diva and Wave Tribe is proud to sponsor this rising star, read more on her blog here

Wave Tribe is a Bunch of Amateurs

by admin on June 18, 2009

We wonder what other surf products company was started and committed to total sustainability in 2007—or even now?

We wonder what other surf accessories company produces nothing but sustainable products? When we started this company in 2007 people in the surf industry were not talking about anything green except the green room we all love when we dip into a tube. We did our research and flew to Asia and visited several factories and NOBODY even thought about making a recycled leash. Then we looked around some more and couldn’t find one surf products manufacturer using sustainable material to produce surfboard bags, and guess what, that’s what we did and continue to do—and we are getting better and better and we are looking at more products, pushing the industry and ourselves to be more responsible.

Next month we’ll be releasing the world’s first organic deckpad—so please tell me whom else in the surf industry is pushing sustainability like we are—in fact if you know of someone I’d love to speak with them, I invite all companies to stand up and make a difference in whatever way they can—this isn’t my fight, it’s OUR fight!

They call us amateurs and they are right, we are amateurs of life and we are learning everyday how NOT to exploit people or our environment, we are discovering new ways to be in harmony with our surroundings, we are not experts of anything and least of all this business but we are constantly looking for ways to do the right thing in a world full of profit margins and corporate greed and at the end of the day we create great surf products that are ecologically minded—World’s Tribe is indeed the First Green Surf Company and our vision is that it isn’t the last!

Peace.

West Bio-plastic packaging: 80% biodegradable cornstarch plastic 20% PE

Did you know that some parts of the Pacific Ocean contain six times more plastic than plankton? Ask any surf shop owner and they will tell you that the accumulation of packaging is consistently overwhelming and although this is not a part of the process that the end user often gets to see, it’s worth giving a thought to the mountains of plastic that fill up store rooms all over the world.

Traditionally, plastic packaging has been made from petrochemicals which are heavily used worldwide; however, the final disposal of used flexible plastics causes problems. If plastic film is not recycled or disposed of correctly it can be a significant source of litter and create serious problems in waste management.

To combat some of these problems we have employed the use of biodegradable cornstarch plastic bags for all our packaging. The cornstarch bags perform equally to traditional plastic packaging being light weight, relatively imperviousness to gas and water but crucially it will reduce the amount of toxic waste and space in landfill as the material biodegrades in a fraction of the time.

Shapers, Surfers, Surfboards, Sacred

by admin on May 18, 2009

Sacred craft is truly one of the best events in the surfing industry—why? Because without shapers, the heart and soul of surfing, there would be nothing sacred about the craft of creating the wave vehicles that we utilize to dance atop of the oceanic curtain. I myself have been shaping for a number of years now and it has brought me closer my relationship with surfboards, it has provided knowledge while assisting me in my ultimate pursuit of ’surfing happiness’ but most importantly it has substantially helped me increase my quiver.

Dave Daum Shaping Seminar

I began my day watching Dave Daum DIY how-to shaping seminar, Dan has a real gift for shaping and teaching, I was impressed by his ability to engage participants, inviting them into the shaping bay while explaining how he shapes, expounding on such techniques as rails, concave, foil—trained as an engineer, he also explained the physics at the core of shaping as any real craftsman-teacher must do.

Entropy Sustainable Surfboards

As Wave Tribe is a green surf company we were on the look out for people moving in sustainable ways and we had the opportunity to speak with a few eco pioneers. Marko, a blank manufacturer since the 1960’s, is now making blanks out of recycled foam and is collecting recycling material from multiple locations to create 100% recyclable blanks—imagine that the #6 packaging sitting in your trashcan (hopefully recyclable bin) could one day become your new surfboard. Speaking of new surfboards, we were also stoked to see Entropy pushing a non toxic resign and also sporting some very nice eco-boards with beautiful bamboo inlays—Entropy is definitely at the forefront of a resign revolution, perhaps one of the most toxic areas in the industry.

Marko Recycled Blanks

In the afternoon we jumped back to the shaping bay and watched Wayne Rich carefully craft a surfboard, I don’t think I have ever seen a more focused shaper, measuring every detail, feeling every contour, it was like watching a Buddhist monk in full meditation and the end result was a work of art like most to Wayne’s boards.

The Master, Wayne Rich

We also ran into our friend’s from Grain Surfboards and they were excited to announce their new partnership with Channel Islands, helping to bring Grain’s fantastic wood sculptures to the Channel Islands lineup—good on ya boys, you still owe me a beer. We also had the pleasure of meeting Danny Hess and we were impressed by his vision for a sustainable future within the surf industry, his shapes are some of the most beautiful surfboards ever to float the earth.

Next Sacred Craft show is October 10-11 in del mar, california
